Arshdeep Singh looking to make an impact as a lower-order batter

In modern cricket, the batting skills of lower-order batters and tailenders are increasingly recognized as crucial. Their contributions, though often overlooked, can significantly impact the outcome of matches, especially in T20 cricket. One such example is the growing prowess of Arshdeep Singh as a batter, who has shown remarkable improvement over the past year.

Arshdeep Singh, primarily known for his left-arm pace, has developed into a handy batter at No. 9. His batting skills haven’t been as visible in the Indian Premier League (IPL) due to the Impact Player rule and the dominant performances of Indian top-order batters. Consequently, Arshdeep rarely gets the chance to bat for the national team. However, his recent performance in a high-pressure match against Pakistan demonstrated his potential as a lower-order batter.

In this crucial game, Arshdeep’s nine runs were decisive, contributing to India’s narrow victory by just six runs. Despite the modest score, his ability to form vital partnerships with Hardik Pandya and Mohammed Siraj played a pivotal role in securing India’s place in the Super 8. These small but significant contributions often become apparent only in close matches where every run counts.

Arshdeep Singh expressed confidence in his batting skills, particularly after facing the formidable Pakistani bowling attack. He proactively requested to bat at No. 9, ahead of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, showing his determination and self-belief.

“Jassi bhai (Bumrah) was supposed to go before me, but I just went in after asking Rohit bhai (Sharma). They were surprised with it, but now I have told them I will go up regardless of whatever you say. I will go at nine because I faced the quickest bowlers in the last game. So yeah, that’s the plan now. I am very confident about my batting. And be it fielding or bowling, you just try to keep getting better,” Arshdeep told reporters.

Arshdeep’s hard work with the batting coach has paid off, as he continues to hone his secondary skill to become a more versatile player. In the fast-paced world of T20 cricket, bowlers who can contribute with the bat provide value to their teams. This ability not only bolsters the lower order but also gives the main batters the confidence to play more aggressively, knowing that the tail can contribute crucial runs if needed.
