Former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting wants the Pat Cummins-led team to put weight behind Mitchell Marsh ahead of Cameron Green for the fourth Ashes Test match against England. Marsh was included in Australia’s playing XI after Green was not fit to play.
Marsh was able to grab his opportunity with both hands, scoring 118 and 28 in the third Test. Furthermore, Marsh was able to dismiss Zak Crawley in both innings.
On the other hand, Cameron Green had scalped three wickets in the first two Test matches and could only score 84 runs. Ergo, he hasn’t been able to deliver with either bat or ball.
Ponting reckons if Australia decides to back under-fire David Warner then Cameron Green will have to miss out. Warner has amassed 141 runs in three Test matches at an average of 23.50 in the ongoing Ashes.
“If they are happy to keep Warner in the side, then unfortunately it’ll be Cam Green that misses again because what we saw Mitchell Marsh do with the bat in the first innings, we haven’t seen Green look like doing that so far in this series,” Ponting said on the latest episode of the ICC Review.
Ponting added that Cameron Green has got all the talent but he hasn’t been able to grab his chance with both hands.
“I know he’s (Green) a highly talented youngster, but with the national series on the line and what Mitch Marsh provided last game and with two top-order wickets as well, let’s not forget about the wickets that he got. I think they might keep him in,” the former Aussie skipper added.
The fourth Ashes Test will be played at Old Trafford from 19th July onwards.
