Aakash Chopra, in a recent video on his YouTube channel, expressed anticipation over Gautam Gambhir’s return to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as a mentor, expecting significant alterations in the team’s setup for the upcoming IPL 2024 auction.
The former KKR skipper, after mentoring the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to consecutive playoffs, is poised to instigate change within the KKR camp, aiming to reinvigorate the team’s fortunes in the highly anticipated league.
Chopra reflected on Gambhir’s shift from LSG to KKR as a surprising yet intriguing move, highlighting Gambhir’s successful tenure with Lucknow and his potential impact on the Kolkata franchise. He noted, “If he has gone, he will do something interesting.”
Aakash Chopra speculated on Gambhir’s strategic preferences, suggesting a potential inclination towards turning pitches at the iconic Eden Gardens. He envisioned, “He will try to get turning pitches made because whether he is the captain or coach, he likes turning pitches, bowler-friendly.”
In contemplating potential releases ahead of the auction, Chopra proposed the likelihood of parting ways with Shardul Thakur and Lockie Ferguson, aiming to bolster the team’s budget. He also deliberated over the retention of Andre Russell, contemplating the compatibility of a turning pitch with the explosive all-rounder’s style.
Shifting focus to other IPL franchise dealings, Chopra lauded Rajasthan Royals’ acquisition of Avesh Khan from Lucknow, emphasizing the importance of a death-bowling option for the team. He analyzed Khan’s potential impact on the Royals’ bowling unit, foreseeing an intriguing performance in the upcoming T20I against Australia.
Commenting on Devdutt Padikkal’s transition to LSG from RR, Chopra stressed the significance of utilizing the talented batsman in the top three for the KL Rahul-led side. He advocated for Padikkal’s positioning at No. 3, suggesting that his batting prowess deserves a higher batting order slot, considering his prior underutilization at RR due to a surplus of top-order batters.
With Padikkal potentially slotting in at No. 3 for LSG, Chopra highlighted the vacancy at the position and expressed hope for the left-hander’s suitability to the Lucknow pitch, emphasizing the need to optimize his talent effectively in the upcoming IPL season.
