Indian vice-captain Rohit Sharma completed 13 years of International cricket on 23 June. The right-hander made his ODI debut against Ireland at Civil Service Cricket Club, Belfast in 2007. However, the right-hander didn’t get a chance to bat in his maiden match as India had won by nine wickets. In fact, he also didn’t get a chance to bat in T20I debut vs England whereas he scored a fine knock of 177 against West Indies on Test debut in 2013.
Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma didn’t play any major knocks in the first six years of his career. The right-hander had all the talent under his belt and he was mainly known for throwing away his wicket with a rash shot.
The stylish batsman could not cement his place in the side as he was not consistent with his performances. In fact, he had only scored two centuries while playing in his first 98 ODI matches whereas he scored as many as 27 in his next 119 ODI games.
However, he was able to turn the tide after he was promoted as an opener by former Indian skipper MS Dhoni in the 2013 Champions Trophy. The Mumbai batsman was able to grab his chances and hasn’t looked back since then. Currently, Rohit is one of the most consistent batsmen in the white ball formats.
Rohit has thus far scored 9115 runs in 224 ODI matches at an impressive average of 49.27 and strike rate of 88.93. The right-hander has also done a fine job in the T20I format as he has scored 2773 runs in 108 T20I matches at an average of 32.24.
The flamboyant batsman is a treat to the eyes and he is one of the most dangerous batsmen when he gets going. The right-hander is also known to get big scores and he is the solitary batsman to score three double centuries in the ODI format.
Rohit added in his post that he never thought that playing in the gullies of Borivalli, will lead to this day, when he is living his dream.
Rohit post read as, “Grateful for 13 amazing years and counting… never thought that playing in the gullies of Borivali would lead to this some day, me living my dream”.
