I have no shame in accepting that my ODI numbers are poor: Suryakumar Yadav

Suryakumar Yadav has undoubtedly established himself as one of the premier batters in the realm of T20 cricket, captivating audiences worldwide with his distinctive batting approach and a rich repertoire of shots. His prowess shines prominently while donning the Mumbai Indians jersey in the IPL and representing the Indian team in T20Is, firmly placing him among the elite talents in the field.

Nevertheless, there exists an area of Suryakumar Yadav’s game that awaits fulfillment, particularly in the realm of ODI cricket. Having participated in 26 ODIs for the Indian side, his run tally stands at a modest 511 runs, with an average of 24.33—an aspect that leaves room for improvement. This year, the 32-year-old has participated in 10 ODIs, managing a meager 14 runs on the scoreboard.

Acknowledging his subpar performance in the 50-over format, the accomplished batter recently took a contemplative stance on his showings. Candidly addressing his shortcomings, he expressed a willingness to admit his struggles in this format. Notably, Suryakumar Yadav engaged in extensive discussions with KL Rahul and the captain, Rohit Sharma, delving into strategies to bolster his performance.

Speaking about his approach, he quoted, “My ODI numbers are very poor and there is no shame in accepting it. Being honest is very important. Rohit and Rahul have told me that this is a format you haven’t played a lot and you need to think about. We want you to play 45 to 50 balls (if you are batting in the last 15 to 18 overs), and you play accordingly, now it’s in my hand to turn this responsibility into an opportunity and how to contribute to the team’s success,” as reported by the Indian Express.

Remarkably showcasing his class and skill, Suryakumar Yadav left an indelible mark in the third T20I encounter between India and the West Indies. In a quest to chase down a target of 160 runs, Yadav emerged as a stalwart, delivering a breathtaking performance. Crafting an exceptional innings, he amassed 83 runs off 44 deliveries, guiding the team to a magnificent seven-wicket triumph—a triumph that rekindled their prospects in the series.

As Suryakumar Yadav’s journey continues, his determination to elevate his ODI game remains steadfast. His recent exhibition of prowess underscores his potential to bridge the gap between formats and contribute significantly to India’s cricketing aspirations.
