Former Indian captain and national selector Dilip Vengsarkar reckons if the selectors are forced to leave out players like Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, and Rinku Singh, it suggests that they have a very strong team. While Rahul could not get a place in the squad, Shubman Gill and Rinku Singh have been included in the reserve players’ list.
India has picked a potent squad and Vengsarkar believes the team is the best in the world. The Rohit Sharma-led team will look to go all the way in the upcoming T20I showpiece and come up with a collective effort.
A lot of cricket experts had criticized the exclusion of Rinku Singh, who had performed consistently for the team in the last couple of years.
“The current Indian team, I think, is one of the best in the world, I would say. If you could, you know, put a Gill out or Rahul or Rinku Singh out, I’m sure it’s a very strong team. And I wish them all the success. Because, I think, it’s one of the best in the world at the moment”, said Vengsarkar said at the Sports Journalists Association of Mumbai’s function.
The former Indian skipper added that the top six batters will hold the key in the upcoming T20I showpiece.
He commented, “The key players would like to play an important role in this T20 World Cup. It’s very difficult to say in this format because everybody is a very important member of the team. But the thing is that, as you have seen in IPL, the first six were very important. How you give a good start in the first six was very important. And of course, in this format, anything can happen”.
Vengsarkar added that any player can be a match-winner for the team in the shortest format of the game.
“But I can’t say X, Y or Z is a key player in the team. In this format, anybody can win the match at any time of the match,” he added.
India will kick start their World Cup campaign against Ireland on June 5 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York.
