Former South African skipper AB de Villiers has advised Shubman Gill to respect his current form and wants him to hang on to it. Gill has been batting like a dream in 2023 as he is ticking the right boxes at the top of the order.
The right-hander from Punjab made a fine start to his IPL 2023 campaign as he scored 63 runs from 36 balls with the help of six fours and three sixes in the opening fixture against Chennai Super Kings. Gill timed the ball to perfection and once again made most of the PowerPlay conditions.
Earlier in the year, Gill scored a truckload of runs in the limited-overs series against Sri Lanka and New Zealand. The youngster also scored a fine century in the fourth Test match against Australia at Ahmedabad.
“Now it’s a matter of respecting your form. Come in, get a good start in the IPL. Get your feet off the ground. He is in good form, he has prepared well, the confidence is there. Now it’s just a matter of respecting the form, don’t let it go,” said De Villiers on Jio Cinema.
On the other hand, former Indian head coach and leg-spinner Anil Kumble also showered praise on Gill for his fine knock.
“It’s pleasing to watch Shubman. When you listen to Shubman now, he recognizes now that he has been getting out in those 40s and 50s, that’s exactly the conversation as a coach you would like to have with him. He is a talented and gifted player,” said Kumble.
Kumbled hailed the youngster for converting his starts, which he wasn’t doing consistently early on in his career.
“He has made some changes and got a lot of runs, hundreds and double hundreds for India. He has carried on from those fifties and sixties and scored those extra 40 runs at the international level and once you do that at the international level, it becomes second nature,” Kumble added.
Gujarat Titans will next lock horns against Delhi Capitals at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi on Tuesday.
