Joe Root Praises Ravichandran Ashwin’s Mastery Ahead of His 100th Test

As the cricketing world turns its eyes towards Dharamsala for the fifth Test between India and England, starting on March 7, veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin receives high praise from England’s senior batter, Joe Root.

Ashwin, known for his relentless pursuit of wickets and aggressive mindset, is set to play his 100th Test, a milestone that places him among the legends of the game.

Joe Root, speaking on the Sky Sports cricket podcast hosted by former England captains Mike Atherton and Nasser Hussain, highlighted Ashwin’s unique approach to the game, which sets him apart from traditional off-spinners.

“Ashwin is always trying to find ways of getting you out rather than trying to wear you down over long periods,” Root said, emphasizing Ashwin’s strategic mindset on the field.

Ashwin, who recently surpassed the 500-wicket mark in Tests, becoming only the second Indian after Anil Kumble to achieve this feat, has been a constant threat to batsmen around the world with his innovative bowling techniques. Root pointed out the variety in Ashwin’s bowling arsenal, including his use of the crease, over-spin, side-spin, and the notorious carrom ball, which keeps batters on their toes.

The ex-England skipper shed light on Ashwin’s ability to bowl six different deliveries in an over, making it challenging for batters to anticipate and play against him. Root’s insights reveal the depth of Ashwin’s game, showcasing his skill in manipulating the ball’s seam position and the strategic use of the shiny side to gain extra skid.

Comparing Ashwin with Nathan Lyon, another premier off-spinner of this generation, Root noted the differences in their bowling styles and strategies. While Lyon focuses on bounce and bringing short leg and leg slip into play, Ashwin’s versatility and ability to drift the ball present a unique set of challenges for the opposition.

Despite England’s ‘Bazball’ approach facing challenges in the ongoing series against India, where they are currently trailing 1-3, Root remains optimistic about the team’s strategy and performance. He stressed the importance of learning from every game and maintaining a pragmatic approach when necessary.

Root also took a moment to commend Jonny Bairstow, set to play his 100th Test in Dharamsala, acknowledging his journey and contributions to English cricket. Despite Bairstow’s struggles with the bat in the series, Root expressed confidence in his fellow Yorkshireman’s ability to bounce back and excel.

As the cricketing fraternity anticipates the commencement of the fifth Test, the spotlight is on Ashwin and Bairstow, both reaching personal milestones in their illustrious careers. The stage is set for a compelling clash, with both teams eager to assert their dominance in the final match of the series.
