Former Indian leg-spinner Anil Kumble wants Kuldeep Yadav to be India’s no.1 spinner in the T20 World Cup. Yadav has been in sensational form in the recent past and he is going to hold the key for India in the T20I showpiece.
Along with Yadav, Indian selectors have picked Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Yuzvendra Chahal as the three other spinners in the World Cup squad.
Meanwhile, the left-arm wrist spinner delivered for Delhi Capitals in the ongoing IPL 2024. Yadav picked 16 wickets in 11 matches of the season at an average of 23.25 and an economy rate of 8.69.
”I don’t know who will be starting in the first game against Ireland. Kuldeep for sure. I don’t know what the pitch conditions are. I don’t think any Indian team has played in the US other than in Fort Lauderdale. So it all depends on the pitch conditions,” Kumble said on JioCinema.
”I guess Kuldeep probably will be the number one spinner in that sense, because he’s your wrist spinner. I’m sure there’ll be one wrist spinner who will play,” said Kumble, who expects spinners to play a major role in the tournament.”
Meanwhile, Indian captain Rohit Sharma earlier revealed that he wanted four spinners in the squad but remained tight-lipped on the strategy.
“I don’t want to go into details on this. I wanted four spinners. We have played a lot of cricket there. The match starts at 10 am. There is a technical aspect involved in this,” Rohit said in a press conference to address queries on the squad selection in Mumbai.
“The reason for picking four spinners is something I won’t reveal now. I wanted our spinners. With two of them being all-rounders and two attacking options, it gives you balance. Based on opposition, we can decide who to play,” added the skipper.
India will begin their T20 World Cup campaign against Ireland on June 5th.
