Former South African skipper AB de Villiers has revealed he loves watching Shreyas Iyer bat and likened his batting with Shubman Gill. After a couple of low scores, Iyer was able to finally grab his chance as he scored 105 runs off 90 balls in the second ODI against Australia.
Iyer was under the pump after returning from back injury however he was able to deliver while batting at number three. The Mumbai batter also added a fine alliance of 200 runs with Shubman Gill for the second wicket against the Aussies. Gill also scored a brilliant knock of 104 runs as he continued his purple patch.
Iyer has been performing consistently while batting in the middle order but a slew of injuries has hampered his progress. The right-hander is well known for his potent game against the spinners in the middle overs and he will hold the key in the upcoming ODI showpiece.
“I love watching Shreyas Iyer bat. I love what he does in the middle, always composed, very calm, and reminds me of Shubman Gill,” said De Villiers on his YouTube Channel.
On the other hand, Shubman Gill has been in terrific form in the ongoing season. The youngster has scored 1230 runs in 20 ODI matches at an unbelievable average of 72.35 and a strike rate of 105.03 in 2023. Out of his total six ODI centuries, five have come in the ongoing year.
India will begin their World Cup campaign against Australia at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on 8th October.
