No captaincy change for India as long as team is performing: Jay Shah

The Board of Control for Cricket in India secretary Jay Shah has confirmed that there will be no change in captaincy for the Indian team as long as the team is performing.

There were reports in TOI that Rohit Sharma will take on the captaincy baton from Virat Kohli after the completion of the T20 World Cup. It was said that Kohli wanted to concentrate on his batting as he isn’t in the best of forms.

However, BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal had also quashed such reports and called them rubbish. Meanwhile, the Indian team has been consistently performing in all three formats of the game and Virat Kohli has done a fine job as a captain. However, Kohli hasn’t been able to take India to a major ICC title under his captaincy tenure so far.

The Indian team is consistently making the later stages of the big events but they haven’t been able to cross the final hurdle. As Rohit Sharma has an incredible record in the IPL, a lot of cricket experts feel the Mumbai batsman should take over the captaincy baton from Virat Kohli in the white-ball format. However, Kohli has been doing a perfect job in all three formats of the game and there seems to be no need to change the captain.

“As long as a team is performing while on the crease, the question of change in captaincy doesn’t arise,” Shah told The Indian Express.

On the other hand, MS Dhoni was named as the mentor of the team for the T20 World Cup. Shah revealed that he had approach Dhoni for the mentoring role and the former skipper was ready for the new chapter.

“He was okay with my decision and agreed to be the mentor for Team India for the T20 World Cup only. I am glad that MS (Dhoni) has accepted the BCCI’s offer and is keen to contribute to the national team once again. MS will work closely with Ravi Shastri as well as other support staff to provide support and direction to Team India,” the BCCI secretary said.

He added that both Kohli and Shastri were kept in the loop for the final decision. “I spoke to the captain and vice-captain, as well as Ravi Shastri. They all are on the same page, so that’s why this matter has reached this conclusion.”

India will aim to end their big event hoodoo in the upcoming T20 World Cup, which will be hosted by BCCI in the UAE.
