Rishabh Pant Eyes Comeback in Australia Series as Matthew Hayden Expresses Confidence Amid Fitness Concerns

Rishabh Pant, once India’s rising star after his heroics in the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, is on the brink of a much-anticipated return to Test cricket. His match-winning 89* at the Gabba remains etched in cricket history, but Pant’s journey since then has been turbulent, marred by injuries following a severe car accident in December 2022.

Now, as India gears up for a crucial two-match Test series against Bangladesh, questions loom over whether Pant will reclaim his spot in the playing XI.

Pant’s fitness for the grueling demands of Test cricket is still uncertain, especially after Dhruv Jurel’s impressive performance against England. The team management faces a tough decision, balancing Pant’s past brilliance with the current form and fitness of Jurel, who could be favored for the series.

Despite these uncertainties, former Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden remains optimistic about Pant’s potential impact. Speaking at the CEAT Cricket Rating Awards on Wednesday, Hayden expressed his belief that Pant’s “muscle memory” and hunger for success will drive him to excel in the upcoming five-match Test series against Australia, starting November 22.

Hayden emphasized Pant’s previous success in Australia, noting how the fans admired his dynamic and fearless approach to batting.

“Guys like Rishabh Pant have got a muscle memory and the thirst for victory. He was such a key player last time he played there, and the Australian public loved him as well, because of the nature of the way he played his game,” Hayden said.

“It was exciting. It was innovative. It was just fresh and good. Then you have got your old stewards, like Virat Kohli, who will want to make an impression again. From a batting point of view, I’m excited to see how India have that strategy to take on the Australian conditions,” he added.

Pant’s immediate challenge lies in proving his readiness in the Duleep Trophy, which begins on September 5, just ahead of the Bangladesh series. This tournament will be crucial for Pant to regain his form and reassure the selectors of his fitness for the international stage.
