Former Indian swashbuckling opener Virender Sehwag feels there is no Indian batter in the current team who bats like him. Sehwag named Prithvi Shaw and Rishabh Pant as the two batters who bat similarly to him.
However, the former Delhi player believes Rishabh Pant gets satisfied after 90-100 whereas he used to get satisfied after scoring a big century.
Pant has been performing consistently in Test matches and he has already played some match-winning innings while playing away in foreign conditions, with his unbeaten 89 at the Gabba at the top of the list. Furthermore, Pant bats down the order whereas Sehwag used to open the innings.
The 25-year-old, who is currently recovering after his horrific accident, has scored 2271 runs in 33 Test matches at an average of 43.67 and has delivered for the team in red-ball version.
Speaking to News18 India Chaupal, Virender Sehwag said, “I don’t think so there is any player in the Indian team who bats like me. The two players who came to my mind who have come close to it are Prithvi Shaw and Rishabh Pant. I think Rishabh Pant is a little bit close to what I used to bat like in Test cricket but he is satisfied with 90-100 but I used to get satisfied with 200, 250 and 300.
“If he took his game to that level then I think he can entertain the fans even more.”
Meanwhile, Sehwag also revealed that Virat Kohli approached him to apply for the head coach role in 2017 after his fallout with Anil Kumble.
“I wouldn’t have applied if Virat Kohli and then BCCI secretary Amitabh Choudhary hadn’t approached me. We had a meeting, and he (Choudhary) told me that things weren’t working out between Virat Kohli and Anil Kumble we want you to take the coaching position.
“He told me that Kumble’s contract will expire after the Champions Trophy in 2017 and then you can travel to West Indies with the team.”
After the 2017 Champions Trophy, Anil Kumble decided to quit as Indian head coach and Ravi Shastri became the new coach of the team.
