Former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly feels Rohit Sharma should be captain in the T20 World Cup whereas Virat Kohli should also be picked in the T20I showpiece. The duo was added to India’s T20I squad for the three-match series against Afghanistan.
Thus, the selectors have indicated that the pair will be back for the T20 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the USA and the West Indies in June.
Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli last played in the T20I format in the T20 World Cup 2022 semifinal against England in Adelaide. Since then, Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav have been leading the team in Rohit Sharma’s absence.
Rohit recently led India to the final of the ODI World Cup but India could not cross the final hurdle against Australia. While Kohli has scored 4008 runs in 115 T20I matches at an average of 52.74, Rohit has amassed 3853 runs in 148 matches at an average of 30.82.
“Rohit should be the captain in the T20 World Cup. Virat Kohli also should be there. Virat Kohli is an outstanding player,” he was quoted as saying in an India Today report.
When asked about the star players making a comeback to the Indian T20 team after a long hiatus, the former Indian opener said: “Nothing will happen.”
The former BCCI president is delighted with the performance of the team on the recent tour of South Africa. India won the ODI series by 2-1 and drew the Test and T20I series by 1-1.
“India is a great team. If they lose one game, then people say a lot of things. But look at how they played, they won the ODI series, a 1-1 in T20Is and in the Tests.”
