Paarl Royals captain David Miller admitted that they didn’t score enough runs against Sunrisers Eastern Cape after losing by five wickets at the Boland Park, Paarl on Thursday. SEC captain Aiden Markram decided to put Paarl Royals into bat after winning the toss.
However, the Royals could only manage 127-7 in their 20 overs as they failed to get going. In fact, almost all the batters got off to starts but none of them could go past the 30-run mark for PR.
Aiden Markram, van der Merwe, and Brydon Carse scalped two wickets each for SEC to put the opposition under pressure.
On the other hand, Jordan Hermann top-scored with 43 runs for SEC to help his team get over the line. Aiden Markram also contributed with 23 whereas Marco Jansen added the finishing touches with 22-ball 21.
Bjorn Fortuin continued his good form as he scalped three wickets for Paarl Royals whereas Lungi Ngidi took two wickets but it was not enough.
David Miller said in the post-match presentation, “It’s about attitude at the end of the day, we didn’t score enough runs. But we fought well in the middle overs. It’s difficult in T20s when you lose wickets. But I think the guys have done well, but today we were not good enough. The pitch did speed up slightly, but it was slower in the afternoon. We need to bring a better attitude on Saturday. Going to be a big weekend for us.”
On the other hand, Aiden Markram was awarded the Player of the Match for his all-around performance against PR.
Markram said after the game, “It wasn’t as convincing a win, but it makes for good watching at the end of the day. Happy to get the win anyway. You need to give yourself some time on such wickets. We’ll take some learning from this and not repeat the mistakes. The bowlers are showing a lot of character, it’s good to see that. Hopefully, they’ll continue. Just looking to squeeze a few overs here and there, hopefully, it’ll go alright. You want such tough situations so it’s nice to have those guys in the team (Jansen and Stubbs), it was nice they got us over the line tonight.”
Paarl Royals will next take on MI Cape Town on Saturday at Boland Park, Paarl.
