Former Australian skipper Aaron Finch has slammed the idea that Virat Kohli needs to prove himself for a place in the T20 World Cup 2024. After the 2022 T20 World Cup, Kohli was not in the scheme of things for T20Is but recently made a comeback against Afghanistan.
After almost a two-month break from the game due to a personal reason, Kohli is back playing in the Indian Premier League for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The talisman scored a match-winning knock of 77 runs off just 49 balls against Punjab Kings on Monday at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.
Kohli has played some unbelievable knocks for India in T20Is and his experience of soaking in the pressure at the big stage could be vital. The veteran had scored a magnum opus knock of 82 runs against arch-rivals in the T20 World Cup 2022 while playing at the MCG.
“I can’t understand why every time there is an ICC event coming up in any format, people always talk about Virat Kohli, is he under pressure for his spot? That is the biggest load of rubbish I have ever heard in my life. He is the greatest player that I have seen in white ball cricket,” Aaron Finch said on Around the Wicket
Finch added if he is the selector, he would pick Virat Kohli as he has all the experience of delivering in the big matches.
“It does not matter whether he strikes at 140, and there are guys that strike at 160. If I am picking a team, you are picking a guy, who you know day in day out, gets the job done in the big games. So, it is just ludicrous that we keep having this conversation,” Finch added
Kohli has performed consistently at the top level and it will be interesting to note his future in T20Is. Royal Challengers Bengaluru will next take on Kolkata Knight Riders M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru on Friday.
