Legendary West Indies fast bowler Curtly Ambrose reckons Virat Kohli is in the same bracket as Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting. Kohli has performed consistently for the Indian team in all three formats of the game.
Kohli has scored 80 centuries across the formats and he is 20 hundreds away from leveling Sachin Tendulkar’s tally. The talisman has an insatiable hunger for runs and has played at the top of his game in the last 15 years.
But Kohli is yet to fire at all cylinders in the ongoing T20 World Cup as he has managed only 66 runs in five games at an average of 13.20. The right-hander scored 37 off 28 balls against Bangladesh in the last game.
“Virat Kohli, the great man, someone who I admire as well, I love watching him. Don’t ask me to compare them (Sachin and Virat). I think, I don’t think I know he’s a great player and how I judge players because people like to compare different eras. I don’t particularly like to do those things,” said Ambrose in an interview with Sports Tak.
“But what I can say is when I look at great batsmen, how I judge them. Like presently Virat Kohli, he’s dominating today’s cricket, my question to myself is would he have done well during my era or before my era? I believe he would and because of that that’s why I give him great. Sachin Tendulkar is the same thing, Ricky Ponting and these guys are great players because they can dominate any era,” he added.
Kohli will be determined to prove his mettle in the remaining matches of the ongoing T20 World Cup. The linchpin has all the experience under his belt and he would want to bring his A-game in the semifinal.
India will next take on Australia at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Gros Islet, St Lucia on Monday.
