India’s veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has showered praise on Virat Kohli after the latter decided to quit as a Test captain.
Kohli took the surprising call to relinquish his Test captaincy duties on Saturday and took to his social media handle to share the shocking news.
Ashwin, who has flourished under Kohli’s leadership, stated that Kohli has left a headache behind for his successor to follow the same footsteps. Ashwin added that Kohli set the benchmarks high as a Test leader and he has definitely left behind a legacy.
Kohli led India in 68 Test matches out of which the team won 40 games, lost 17 and drew 11. Kohli also savored great success in overseas conditions as he led the team to 16 foreign wins, lost 14 matches, and drew six games. The Test series win in Australia in 2018-19 was the highlight of Kohli’s Test captaincy career.
The talisman was known to take the bull by its horns as a leader and definitely took Indian cricket to new heights. Ashwin added that Kohli sowed the right seeds, which took Indian cricket in the right direction and his contribution as a leader will always be remembered.
“Cricket captains will always be spoken about with respect to their records and the kind of triumphs they managed, but your legacy as a captain will stand for the kind of benchmarks you have set. There will be people who will talk about wins in Australia, England , Sl etc etc,” he began in his Twee.
“Wins are just a result and the seeds are always sown well before the harvest! The seeds you managed to sow is the kind of standard you set for yourself and hence set the expectations straight with the rest of us”.
“Well done @imVkohli on the headache you have left behind for your successor and that’s my biggest takeaway from your stint as captain. “We must leave a place at such an altitude that the future can only take it higher from there on,” he concluded.
The Indian team grew in confidence under the leadership of Virat Kohli and they had the confidence to win against any opposition and in any condition. Furthermore, Kohli played a key role in strengthening India’s pace battery.
India will next face South Africa in three-match ODI series.
