Former Indian Test opener Wasim Jaffer reckons Sanju Samson needs to learn from his mistakes and be more consistent for the Indian team if he has to seal his place. Samson played with an aggressive approach in the third ODI against the West Indies as he scored 51 runs from 41 balls with the help of two fours and four maximums.
The right-hander from Kerala was able to get off the blocks in a jiffy and gave a much-needed impetus to the team. However, Samson was dismissed by Romario Shepherd when he was looking to clear the mid-off fielder but could not succeed after getting to his personal milestone of fifty.
Jaffer reckons consistency is an issue with Sanju Samson and he needs to make the most of his chances. Samson was given the license to bat in an aggressive manner in the third ODI and he had done a decent job.
“He (Sanju Samson) played well, but he plays a very high-risk game. If you look at his innings, he came out and hit those couple of sixes. It connected and went for six, but he could have gotten out if he had mistimed. That’s been the case with Sanju Samson. So, somebody to bat at No.4 and play like that, I have my doubts,” Jaffer told ESPNCricinfo.
The former domestic giant also expressed concern regarding Sanju Samson’s consistency in the IPL. It has been noticed that Samson sometimes plays a breathtaking knock before going through a lull period.
“That’s fine if the team management gives him that licence, but consistency is also an issue. You want to be destructive, but you don’t want to score in two or three innings out of six. That’s my concern. Even in the IPL, we have seen that there are some good innings and some really lean patches. That’s been the case. So he needs to learn,” Jaffer added.
Samson will be in action in the first T20I against the West Indies, which will be played in Trinidad on Thursday.
