India’s veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin wants ICC to consider organizing a three-match series for the World Test Championship final. India has qualified for two WTC Finals but lost both to New Zealand in 2021 and Australia in 2023.
However, Ashwin reckons there could have been a chance of a comeback if there would have been two more Test matches. India was dominant in the first cycle of the World Test Championship but could not cross the final hurdle against the Kiwis in English conditions.
India once again could not get the job done against Pat Cummins-led team in the second WTC Final.
“Yes, we lost two WTC finals, I accept it wholeheartedly. But in a case of Test series, a comeback is always possible,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.
“We played New Zealand in England, then we played Australia in England; we lost both. But was there a chance of comeback if we played two more Test?” the spinner further added.
The veteran spinner feels ICC should consider hosting a three-match WTC Final if there is a window available for it.
“It’s just fine margins. So, should the WTC final be played as a series? Is there a window available for it? The ICC should decide that,” Ashwin said.
Meanwhile, India is currently in the second rank in the WTC points table, behind Australia. India lost the opening Test match against South Africa by an innings and 32 runs however they bounced back strongly to win the second Test against the Proteas by seven wickets.
India has come up with consistent performances in Test matches, especially while playing in overseas conditions and a lot of credit goes to their potent pace battery.
