Chennaiyin FC has bolstered its attacking lineup with the signing of Colombian striker Wilmar Jordan Gil on a one-year contract. The announcement came on Tuesday, making Gil their fifth acquisition for the 2024-25 Indian Super League (ISL) season.
This addition is significant as it also makes Gil the third foreign player to join the team this season, following the signings of Elsinho Dias and Chima Chukwu. The club had previously secured an extension for their captain, Ryan Edwards.
Wilmar Jordan Gil is no stranger to the ISL, having spent the last two seasons in the league. He made his ISL debut with NorthEast United FC in 2022 before moving to Punjab FC for the following season. During his time with both clubs, Gil showcased his goal-scoring prowess, netting eight goals in 15 appearances. His cumulative performance in the league includes an impressive tally of 24 goals in 33 appearances across both teams.
Chennaiyin FC’s head coach Owen Coyle expressed his enthusiasm about the new signing. “Wilmar has had a fantastic career and scored goals everywhere he has been. Scoring 24 goals in 33 appearances between NorthEast and Punjab is a great ratio for a striker. We are delighted to add that kind of firepower to our attack,” Coyle stated.
Gil’s football journey is decorated with numerous achievements. He began his senior career with Monagas in Venezuela, where he made 35 appearances and emerged as the top scorer with 20 goals. His scoring capabilities soon took him to international leagues, with stints at Gyeongnam FC in South Korea in 2011 and the Bulgarian side Litex Lovech in 2013. At Litex Lovech, Gil continued his goal-scoring form, topping the charts with 20 goals.
Reflecting on his new chapter with Chennaiyin FC, the 33-year-old striker expressed his excitement and determination. “I am very happy to be part of this great club and team, and very grateful to the directors and the coach for this great opportunity they have given me. I have always dreamed of playing in Chennai, and now I’m given this beautiful opportunity. With a lot of work, humility, and sacrifice, we can fulfill all the objectives we set for ourselves and win the title,” Gil stated.
As Chennaiyin FC gears up for the upcoming season, the addition of Wilmar Jordan Gil is expected to significantly enhance their attacking options. The club’s supporters will be eagerly watching to see how Gil integrates with the team and contributes to their pursuit of the ISL title. With a proven track record and a hunger for success, Gil’s arrival is a promising development for the Chennaiyin FC faithful.
