Chennaiyin FC Stages 3-2 Comeback Against NorthEast United FC in Five-Goal Thriller

Chennaiyin FC pulled off a remarkable 3-2 comeback victory over NorthEast United FC in a thrilling encounter at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati on Thursday, marking a strong return to the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 season after the international break.

NorthEast United took an early lead just five minutes into the game, with a swift counterattack that saw Parthib Gogoi setting up Nestor Albiach. The Spanish midfielder made no mistake, slotting the ball home to give the Highlanders a perfect start. However, what followed was a back-and-forth battle between the two sides as they both struggled to establish control in midfield.

Chennaiyin FC, led by head coach Owen Coyle, gradually found their rhythm. A well-executed corner from Connor Shields in the 25th minute found Wilmar Jordan Gil, who powered a header into the net to level the score. The Colombian striker’s goal shifted the momentum in favour of Chennaiyin, who began to dictate the pace of the match.

Nine minutes later, the visitors took the lead. Ryan Edwards was fouled in the box by Michel Zabaco, and Chennaiyin was awarded a penalty. Lukas Brambilla stepped up and confidently converted the spot-kick, putting Chennaiyin FC ahead 2-1.

The second half started with Chennaiyin continuing to press forward, and they capitalized again in the 51st minute. Jordan added his second goal of the night, taking advantage of a momentary lapse in concentration by the NorthEast United defense, who had stopped playing, expecting an offside call that never came.

Despite holding the majority of possession in the second half, NorthEast United struggled to create clear-cut chances. Chennaiyin’s defense, bolstered by the introduction of Elsinho, stood firm. NorthEast’s frustrations grew when Laldinliana Renthlei was sent off in the 83rd minute after receiving a second yellow card, reducing the hosts to ten men.

However, late drama ensued as Alaaeddine Ajaraie won a penalty for NorthEast United after being brought down by Irfan Yadwad. Ajaraie calmly converted the spot-kick in the 89th minute, scoring his fifth goal in as many games this season. Despite the late resurgence, NorthEast United could not find an equalizer, and Chennaiyin FC held on for a crucial three points.

The win moves Chennaiyin FC back on track as they seek to climb the ISL standings, while NorthEast United will need to regroup after the disappointing home loss.
