Indian Super League outfit East Bengal suffered a 1-0 defeat against arch-rivals Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the final of the 2023 Durand Cup. However, what was more disappointing on the day was their Australian defender Jordan Elsey’s injury.
The former Perth Glory star was substituted in the first half after he was evidently struggling with a problem on his knee. Jose Antonio Pardo replaced him during the game which eventually the Red and Gold Brigade lost.
Elsey, who joined during the summer transfer window for East Bengal was exceptional throughout the Durand Cup campaign. Although he had a poor start against the Bangladesh Army, he proved his mettled during his first full-start against Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the group stage derby that East Bengal won 1-0 and went on to top the group.
In these five matches for the Red and Gold Brigade in the Durand Cup, Elsey even netted his first goal for the club. However, his journey temporarily comes to an end as he has suffered a knee injury which will keep him out of action for a few months.
“Unfortunately though, Jordan had to be subbed off in the first half, due to this injury, and the player now looks to work hard towards his recovery,” the club said in a statement.
“We will continue to support Jordan through this difficult phase, and wish him a speedy recovery.”
This comes as very shocking news as Elsey had already settled into coach Carles Cuadrat’s system and was shaping up nicely. He also shared a good bond with the fans and it is really heart-breaking for the Australian defender.
Elsey put out an Instagram post stating his unfortunate condition, “For the first time in a long time I was really enjoying my football and then something crazy like this happens. That’s life… I want to thank East Bengal fans, players & staff for their support throughout this tough time.”
As per reports, East Bengal have already started searching for a new foreign defender of Asian origin. Some names are already emerging but it is understood that the club will release Elsey as his recovery will take a substantial amount of time. With the ISL starting later this month, it will be crucial for East Bengal to find a replacement.
Before his move to East Bengal, the centre-back has spent his professional career in Australia. He has represented Newcastle Jets, Adelaide United and Perth Glory. He won the A-League Premiership and the Championship with Adelaide United in the 2015-16 season. He also clinched two Australian cup honors in 2018 and 2019.
