Cristiano Ronaldo, 39, has indicated that doesn’t plan to announce his retirement from International football, anytime soon. Ronaldo’s Portugal was knocked out of Euro 2024 after they suffered a 5-3 loss on penalties against France in the quarterfinal clash, following Joao Felix’s miss.
Ronaldo failed to score a single goal throughout the tournament despite starting in all five matches and received criticism for his ordinary performance. This was the first time when Ronaldo failed to score a single goal at a major international event. However, during the campaign, Ronaldo revealed that this was going to be his last Euro for the national team.
Ronaldo appeared in his sixth Euro for Portugal, which is the most for any player in the history of the tournament. The talisman scored 14 goals and provided eight assists in the European championship.
Ronaldo wrote on social media, “We wanted more. We deserved more. For us. For each one of you. For Portugal.
“We are grateful for everything you have given us and for everything we have achieved so far. On and off the field, I am sure that this legacy will be honoured and will continue to be built. Together.”
Meanwhile, Ronaldo has scored 130 goals in 212 appearances for Portugal after making his debut with the national team back in 2003. Ronaldo’s tally is the highest in the history of the game.
After Portugal’s exit, the team’s head coach Roberto Martinez said it was too early to say if this was Ronaldo’s last game with the national team.
Portugal is back in action on Sept. 5 when they take on Croatia in their Group A opener of the UEFA Nations League.
