In the last decade or so, teams have started using a three-man midfield in which either one or two midfielders are given the license to attack.
These attacking midfielders are very important in modern day football and are in high demand. Here are 3 attacking midfielders who can come to the party in the Euros:
1) Kevin de Bruyne: Kevin de Bruyne has cemented his place as the best attacking midfielder over the last three seasons. He is a vital cog in the Manchester City but he is even more important for Belgium. He can either play in the two-man midfield for them or operate on the right side of attack, just behind Romelu Lukaku. De Bruyne’s consistency and Lukaku form and clinical nature for Belgium will be two of Belgium’s biggest strength, but if Eden Hazard can turn it on then the Three Lions will be one of the teams to beat this summer.
2) Bruno Fernandes: Bruno Fernandes is the only player who can rival de Bruyne’s claims of being the best attacking midfielder right now. Since Bruno has arrived in England, he has been more productive than his Manchester City counterpart. However, unlike de Bruyne, Bruno doesn’t have a great record for his national team. As Portugal will try to defend their Euro crown, they will want players such as Bruno Fernandes to step up on the big stage. He just has two goals in 27 games for Portugal so far, but if he can score the same amount in the tournament, it will be a good return for a midfielder.
3) Gini Wijnaldum: Gini Wijnaldum is a terrific player but one can argue he is not an attacking midfielder, let alone be an attacking midfielder on the level of De Bruyne or Bruno. But Gini Wijnaldum turns into a different animal when he plays for Netherlands. He is given the freedom to support the attack and he hasn’t disappointed. The former Liverpool man has scored 22 goals for his nation with a goal every three or four games. This is a magnificent record for a midfielder and it over shadows even Kevin De Bruyne’s numbers for Belgium.
