Indian Super League’s reigning champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant have signed a new contract with their head coach Juan Ferrando, keeping him at the club for another year. The Spanish joined the Kolkata outfit in 2021 from FC Goa. He guided the team to a third-place finish in that season and then went on to win the ISL trophy last season.
However, Ferrando needs to achieve some success at the continental level as his team has not gone beyond the AFC Cup Inter-Zonal Playoffs. Ferrando will have another opportunity to prove himself as they defeated Hyderabad to earn their place in the AFC Cup preliminary stage.
Ferrando was full of gratitude as he promised the fans to bring joy to his faces. He also thanked Sanjeev Goenka for his complete support. He said,“I am pleased to continue working as the coach of Mohun Bagan Super Giant. I am grateful to Sanjiv Goenka, the director, for giving me this opportunity. I assure our team’s supporters that I will give my best, and we will strive for further success in the upcoming season.”
Courtesy of their performances earlier, FC Goa became the first-ever team to feature in the AFC Champions League in 2021. Fortunately, Juan Ferrando was their head coach at that time. They made commendable results and finished third in a tough group. However, later Mumbai City FC surely did a lot better than the Gaurs in the same tournament.
But Ferrando has experience of coaching in such crucial continental matches and hopefully this time, he will show his prowess for the Kolkata outfit. His responsibility also lies on defending the title won by the team and also winning the Shield by dominating the league stage.
As the reigning champions, we bear greater responsibility, and the expectations from our fans will be high. The philosophy of the club is to continuously improve and achieve success. This time, we are focused on building a stronger team. Our aim is not only to defend our title but also to excel in the AFC Cup. Our talented footballers will gather in Kolkata on July 15, and from that very day, we will commence our preparations for the upcoming season,” he added.
Club owner Dr. Sanjeev Goenka was also very happy with Ferrando’s extension. He said,” We are delighted to extend the contract of Juan (Ferrando) for the new season. Juan led us to the Hero ISL trophy last season. We are expecting more success and trophies from him in the upcoming season.”
Mohun Bagan Super Giant have made wholesale changes to their Champion team, it will be crucial to see how Ferrando uses these players in a full working system.
