How Scotland could line up in their first match of Euro 2020?

Scotland have a rich footballing history which has seen some greats of the game like Kenny Dalglish and Denis Law play for them in the past.

This will be their first major tournament appearance since 1998, so saying they are outsiders is putting it mildly. In recent years they have had some of their stars feature for big Premier League clubs, so Scotland could be an exciting team to watch.

Probable Lineup: Craig Gordon; Grant Hanley, Scott McTominay, Kieran Tierney; Ryan Fraser, John McGinn, Callum McGregor/Kenny McLean, Stuart Armstrong, Andrew Robertson; Che Adams, Lyndon Dykes.

Defence: Scotland tend to either operate in a back three or back four formations. Due to the presence of two very good left backs, captain Andrew Robertson occupies a more attacking role in midfield. Scott McTominay is another player who plays out of position for his country as the Manchester United central midfielder is at the heart of the Scottish defence with Grant Hanley as the 3rd wheel. Craig Gordon and David Marshall will fight for the number 1 jersey.

Midfield: Scotland’s midfield has a lot of exciting players who ply their trade in the Premier League. Newcastle’s Ryan Fraser, Aston Villa’s John McGinn and Southampton’s Stuart Armstrong are all expected to be fixtures in the Scottish midfield. Callum McGregor or Kenny McLean will be the most defensive minded midfielder.

Captain Andrew Robertson will hope to carry over his attacking displays with Liverpool over to the Euros. Both Robertson and Tierney will be crucial players for Scotland this summer.

Attack: Scotland’s attack is arguably their weakest department. Che Adams, who switched nationalities recently is their best option to lead the line.

For the second striker, Steve Clarke can either choose the in-form Lyndon Dykes or the man for all seasons James Forrest. Celtic’s Ryan Christie is an alternative if they decide to operate in a 3-5-1-1 formation. Scotland have a lot of options in the attacking segment, but none of the players are goal banks which could prove to be a hindrance.
