“I would like to score more goals and provide more assists,” Sreenidi Deccan FC’s skillful midfielder Phalguni Singh aims after a fruitful Super Cup campaign

Sreenidi Deccan FC have shocked most Indian football fans with their exceptional performances in the Super Cup. After they defeated Kerala Blasters in the second match, they had a clear-cut chance of going through to the semifinals. But they couldn’t take that last step and faltered against RoundGlass Punjab in the final group stage clash. They lost 1-0 and their dreams of playing in the knockout stage of the Super Cup was shattered.

However, the tournament was a massive learning curve for the Sreenidi Deccan FC players. Some of them have already caught the eye of the scout. One such star player has to be Konsham Phalguni Singh. The tricky midfielder was adjudged the ‘Man of the Match’ after their win against the Blasters.

Sreenidi were most looking to hit Kerala Blasters on the counters and those transition plays were mostly orchestrated by Phalguni in the middle. His ball control and ability to make sharp turns make him a very valuable asset in the advanced midfield position.

After their win over Kerala Blasters, Phalguni shared the bonding among the players and how everyone is putting their bodies on the line for each other. “We have been playing with a lot of effort and enthusiasm,” said Phalguni, who obliged for a short chat with the AIFF after the game. “Everyone is playing for each other, and that is showing through our team effort.”

The young midfielder believes in proving people wrong with his actions on the field and speaking less when he is off the field. He is always looking to improve and his constant retrospection has helped the youngster get this far and will hopefully take him higher.

“I feel really good, but I will try to do even better in the next match. In terms of improvement, I would like to try and score more goals and provide more assists,” he said after winning the man of the match prize for his exceptional performance in the Kerala Blasters match.

Phalguni has been a part of Sreenidi Deccan’s first I-League season in 2021-22 but before that, he was plying his trade for TRAU. He helped his hometown club gain promotion from the 2nd Division League to the I-League.

Sreenidi Deccan FC finished with four points in the second spot, behind Bengaluru FC. They have only four points, whereas Bengaluru FC managed a draw against Kerala Blasters to earn five points. Hence the Blues will go forward to the semifinals.
