Iker Guarrotxena Rejoins FC Goa for 2024-25 Season

FC Goa has officially confirmed the return of Spanish midfielder Iker Guarrotxena for the 2024-25 season. This announcement brings a wave of excitement among fans and promises to boost the Gaurs’ ambitions in the Indian Super League (ISL), Durand Cup, and Kalinga Super Cup.

Guarrotxena first made his mark with FC Goa in the 2022-23 season, showing his skills and quickly becoming a fan favourite. Over the course of that season, he scored 13 goals in 23 appearances across the ISL and Kalinga Super Cup, establishing himself as the club’s top scorer. His technical ability and leadership on the pitch played a crucial role in the team’s success and left a lasting impression on the supporters.

After his stint with FC Goa, Guarrotxena returned to Spain but soon came back to India for a brief spell with Mumbai City FC last season. In just six matches, he managed to score three goals and provide two assists, contributing significantly to Mumbai City’s strong finish as runners-up in the ISL League Stage, just above FC Goa.

Head Coach Manolo Marquez expressed his enthusiasm about Guarrotxena’s return: “We are thrilled to have Iker back with us. He is a complete player with great spirit and character, and he has a deep understanding of Indian football. His performance with Mumbai City FC last season highlighted his decisive nature and ability to score crucial goals. His experience and familiarity with our playing style will make him a tremendous asset to the squad.”

Guarrotxena, too, is excited about his return: “Coming back to Goa is very special for me. It’s not just about returning to a former team; it’s about coming back to a place that feels like home. I’m reuniting with friends and a club where I believe we can achieve great things. I’m here not only because I love the city and the club, but also because I am confident that we can win trophies this season. I can’t wait to celebrate with all the Goans.”

Born in Bilbao, Spain, Guarrotxena brings a wealth of experience from his career in various leagues. He began his senior career in 2011 with CD Basconia in the Tercera Division and later played for Arenas Getxo, CD Tenerife, CD Mirandes, and Cultural Leonesa. His international journey saw him join Polish top-division team Pogon Szczecin in 2018, followed by stints at Greek Super League’s Volos NPS and Australia’s A-League side Western United.

In 2021, Guarrotxena returned to Spain to play for UD Logrones in the Primera Division RFEF, where he finished as the fourth-highest goal-scorer with 14 goals, aiding his team’s promotion play-off quest.

However, his time in India, especially with FC Goa, has been a defining chapter in his career. Guarrotxena’s return to the Men in Orange is set to be one of the most significant signings for the upcoming season, bringing both experience and a proven track record in Indian football.

FC Goa has also announced several other new arrivals, including Aakash Sangwan, Muhammad Hammad, and Lara Sharma, while extending contracts for key players such as Odei Onaindia, Jay Gupta, Muhammed Nemil, Arshdeep Singh, Rowllin Borges, and Mohammad Yasir.

As the Gaurs prepare for the 2024-25 season, Guarrotxena’s return injects a sense of renewed optimism and determination. The team is poised to aim for top honours, with Guarrotxena’s experience and leadership playing a vital role in their quest for glory.
