Dimitrios Diamantakos, the winner of the 2023/24 Indian Super League (ISL) Golden Boot, has announced his departure from Kerala Blasters after two successful years with the club. The Greek forward, who tied with Odisha FC’s Roy Krishna with 13 goals, was awarded the Golden Boot due to his superior goals-per-game ratio.
Diamantakos shared his heartfelt farewell on Instagram, expressing his gratitude to the club and its fans: “Unfortunately these 2 amazing, full of exciting adventures and experiences, years in Kerala have come to an end… I do not have words to express myself for the moments we have cherished together as a team. You made me feel more welcomed than ever and I couldn’t be more grateful about that. The continuous support and love that I have received since day one from our fans has been incredible. Thank you @kbfc_manjappada, I will always remember you and I wish you the best of luck!!”
The Greek striker joined Kerala Blasters in 2022 from Croatian side HNK Hajduk Split for a transfer fee of Rs 2 crore. Over the course of the 2023/24 season, Diamantakos proved his worth, scoring 13 goals in 17 matches and providing three assists, cementing his reputation as one of the most effective strikers in the league.
Despite Diamantakos’ individual brilliance, Kerala Blasters finished fifth on the points table, just missing out on a playoff spot. His departure is a significant blow to the team, which will now have to fill the void left by their top scorer.
While Diamantakos and Kerala Blasters have yet to comment on his next move, rumours suggest he may remain in the ISL. Clubs like Mumbai City and East Bengal are reportedly interested in acquiring the services of the 31-year-old forward. These speculations highlight the impact Diamantakos has made in the league and his desirability among top clubs.
Kerala Blasters fans are left reflecting on the contributions of Diamantakos during his tenure. His consistent goal-scoring and ability to create opportunities made him a fan favourite and a key player in the team’s lineup. The announcement of his departure has generated mixed emotions among supporters, who are grateful for his efforts but saddened by his exit.
As the Blasters prepare for the next season, the club will have to strategize on how to replace Diamantakos’ goal-scoring prowess. The management’s task is now cut out to find a forward who can replicate or exceed the Greek striker’s contributions on the pitch.
