Kerala Blasters announce the signing of defender Victor Mongil

Kerala Blasters have decided to sign Spanish defender Victor Mongil for the Indian Super League 2022-23 season and the deal was officially announced by the club. Mongil has signed until 2023, but has the option to extend his contract with the club after the conclusion of the season.

This is far from being Mongil’s first adventure in the ISL. He has previously represented ATK Mohun Bagan (then known as ATK) as well as Odisha FC in the premier football league in India. He appeared in 19 matches for Odisha last season and also captained the club.

The 29-year-old has strong and tall physique and is also versatile. Not only can he play in central defence, he can also deputise at the base of the midfield and provide defensive cover.

“I am very happy to announce that I am officially a Kerala Blasters player. I am looking forward to being with my teammates and for a very exciting season to begin. Surely this year together with the fans and their return to the stadiums we will be able to fight for very nice things” said Victor Mongil.

Kerala Blasters’ Sporting Director Karolis Skinkys was extremely satisfied with the signing. “Victor is an experienced ISL player, a team minded guy and player who can cover different positions. He showed high motivation to join our project and that’s very important factor. I wish Victor all best for the upcoming season.”

Victor Mongil had started his youth career in the Villarreal academy and had also played for Atletico Madrid B and Levante B in Spain before moving abroad. He has also had two stints with Georgian top flight club FC Dinamo Tbilisi. Victor helped Dinamo Tbilisi win the title in Georgia and also represented the club in the Europa League.

The experienced defender had signed for ATK in the January transfer window of the 2019-20 ISL season and featured prominently in the squad that eventually ended up winning the title that season. Following the short stint with the champions, he returned to Dinamo Tbilisi following the 2020 season.

Victor made his comeback to the Indian Super League with Odisha FC in 2021 and he was even appointed as the captain towards the beginning of the season. He has also had the experience of playing for the U17 Spanish national team.
