Key Takeaways from a Thrilling Matchweek 8 of ISL 2024-25

Matchweek 8 of the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 season demonstrated the league’s intense competitiveness, with even struggling teams showcasing grit and determination.

Despite a modest tally of 14 goals across six matches, the action remained captivating as four games ended in hard-fought draws.

Here are the key highlights from the week:

FC Goa’s Resurgence

FC Goa emerged as one of the big winners, climbing back into the top half of the table with consecutive victories. Their 2-1 comeback win over Punjab FC followed a landmark triumph against Bengaluru FC, marking a turnaround in form.

A significant factor in their resurgence has been defensive improvement. With the return of Sandesh Jhingan, Goa has conceded just one goal in their last two games, a stark contrast to the 12 they allowed in their first six matches. These wins have placed the Gaurs within five points of league leaders Bengaluru FC, setting them up for a strong push after the international break.

Hyderabad FC Sends a Strong Statement

Hyderabad FC pulled off one of the most impressive results of the week with a 2-1 victory over Kerala Blasters FC in Kochi. After conceding an early goal, Thangboi Singto’s men mounted a spirited comeback.

This was Hyderabad’s second win of the season, already surpassing their tally from last year. Both victories have come away from home, proving their ability to deliver results under pressure. Defeating Kerala Blasters, a team traditionally dominant at home, marks Hyderabad as a side capable of upsetting stronger opponents.

Nathan Rodrigues Shines for Mumbai City FC

Young defender Nathan Rodrigues continued his breakout campaign, scoring a crucial equalizer in Mumbai City FC’s 1-1 draw against Chennaiyin FC. His second goal of the season summed up his growing influence, as he has become an attacking asset from the left-back position.

Rodrigues’ performances have solidified his role in the starting XI, and his blend of defensive solidity and attacking contributions could make him a key figure for the Islanders.

Alaaeddine Ajaraie’s Historic Streak

NorthEast United FC’s Alaaeddine Ajaraie continued his phenomenal form, scoring twice in a 2-2 draw against Bengaluru FC to extend his scoring streak to eight games, tying Kalu Uche’s ISL record. Ajaraie’s clinical finishing has been vital for his team, as his 10 goals account for more than half of NorthEast United’s season tally.

With Ajaraie firing on all cylinders, NorthEast United has transformed into a formidable attacking unit, and his presence makes them a threat to any opponent.

East Bengal FC’s Gritty Fight

East Bengal FC earned their first point of the season in a spirited goalless draw against Mohammedan SC, despite playing much of the game with 10 men. The defensive effort, spearheaded by goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Gill, showed resilience and teamwork in a high-stakes derby.

Though they remain at the bottom of the table, the performance offers a glimmer of hope for better results post the international break.

As the league pauses for the international break, the narratives of Matchweek 8 underline the ISL’s unpredictability. Teams like FC Goa and Hyderabad FC are building momentum, while players like Ajaraie and Rodrigues are making their mark. The coming weeks promise even more drama and competition as the season progresses.
