FC Goa’s youngster Muhammed Nemil has opined that last year’s Durand Cup was one of the most memorable moments of his young career. FC Goa had beaten Mohammedan SC by 1-0 in the final of Durand Cup 2021 to clinch their second title.
Nemil had played a key role in taking the Gaurs to glory in the tournament as he had scored four goals and provided two assists. FC Goa will begin their campaign against Mohammedan FC on 16th August in Kolkata, in what will be a repeat of the previous edition final.
Nemil said because of his impressive performance in the 2021 Durand Cup for FC Goa, he was able to make it to the club’s first team.
“Last year’s Durand Cup was one of my most memorable times as a footballer. I was able to perform well, which later gave me a spot in the FC Goa first-time. It had been a long-term dream to play in the ISL, and Durand Cup helped me achieve that,” he said as quoted by Hero ISL official website.
“I’m happy to be back now as the team prepares to defend the title. I’ll surely give it my all and work harder than ever to help my team get great results.”
Nemil will spearhead FC Goa along with Hrithik Tiwari, Ayush Chhetri, and Phrangki Buam as these four are the only first-team players.
“We all are basically of the same age group, and all of my teammates are really good at the game. We are learning from each other, helping each other out, and working together in the hope of enjoying success also as one single unit,” he said.
On the other hand, head coach Deggie Cardozo added that there will not be any pressure on him as reigning champions.
“I won’t say there’s any ‘added’ pressure as such, given the tag of ‘defending champions. Our top objective, of course, is to try and bring back the trophy home and we have been preparing for the same as well. The team is in good shape, and the players are eager to show everyone
