Indian football head coach Igor Stimac reckons Manvir Singh’s physical presence was crucial against Kuwait. The Blue Tigers registered a 1-0 win against Kuwait in their opening game of second-round Group A of the World Cup qualifiers 2023-25 at the Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneshwar on Thursday.
Manvir Singh found the back of the net in the 75th minute and played a key role in the success of the team. Singh is an important player for India and he is going to hold the key in upcoming matches.
“Manvir is playing with great form at his club. He has assists and has been scoring goals on a regular basis,” Stimac explained in an interview with the Times of India.
“His physical presence on the pitch was also crucial. We needed that height and strength to defend set pieces and corners. That’s why we decided to leave Chhangte (out) and bring him later, where he could make an impact.”
In fact, this was India’s first away win in a FIFA World Cup qualifying match since 2001. The Mohun Bagan Super Giant player delivered when it mattered the most and got the job done. The Croatian said Singh deserves a lot of credit for the team’s success.
“I would say that Manvir never gets enough credit for what he does on the field. People behave as if we have 100 options for centre forward. Many times, when it comes to Manvir and Rahim (Ali), people criticise a lot, but I’d never give up on these guys,” he concluded.
Meanwhile, Singh is doubtful for the Tuesday match against Qatar due to injury and it is a big blow for the Blue Tigers. There is no doubt that the match against Qatar will be a tough one and Singh’s absence is going to make it even more difficult for Stimac’s team.
