Chennaiyin FC head coach Owen Coyle admitted there was a lack of concentration from his team after their 1-0 loss against Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the Indian Super League at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan Stadium, Kolkata on Saturday.
After a goalless first half, Jason Cummings scored the decisive goal in the 86th minute of the game to put his team in front after Greg Stewart provided the assist.
Meanwhile, the Marina Machans had 35.6% possession and took three shots on target but the visitors could not bring their best.
“We had the ball in a very good position. We used to retain possession. So, there was a lack of concentration, which can happen when young players are getting tired. And then, of course, they play a pass (that arrives at) Greg Stewart, somebody I know very well. And he’s able to play the pass to Jason Cummings,” Coyle said during the post-match press conference.
Coyle showered praise on Greg Stewart, who played under his tutelage at Jamshedpur FC. Stewart was able to hit the post twice and bagged the Player of the Match for his fine display.
“Greg Stewart and Jason Cummings will play for any team in the league. Greg Stewart is arguably, since he came in, probably one of the best, if not the best player in the league since I brought him into the league with Jamshedpur FC,” he added.
Chennaiyin FC is in eighth place with three wins, three draws, and four losses with a total of 12 points. Coyle said they are placed well in the ISL standings and he is hopeful of picking points at home.
“We’re still well-placed, and that’s why I’m excited moving forward because with the home games coming, we can pick up points and look to move ourselves back into those playoff places. And that’s what we’ll look to do.”
“We have two home games now, East Bengal FC and Hyderabad FC at home. And we have to make sure we replicate those levels of energy and drive,” Coyle commented.
Chennaiyin FC will next face East Bengal FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Chennai on Saturday.
