Cristiano Ronaldo has left Manchester United by mutual agreement, the club announced on Tuesday. Ronaldo’s sacking comes after his bombshell interview with Piers Morgan in which he thrashed the team’s owners, the Glazers, the management, and gaffer Erik Ten Hag.
Ronaldo had said that the few guys from the management were not happy with his arrival and things had not changed at Manchester United and thus they are struggling to compete against the top teams.
Ronaldo also revealed that the club doubted him when he missed the pre-season due to his daughter’s illness.
The Portugal captain made 346 appearances in his two spells with the club, scoring 145 goals for the Red Devils. He won three Premier League titles and one Champions League title with the club during his first stint.
A statement issued by the club on Tuesday read: “Cristiano Ronaldo is to leave Manchester United by mutual agreement, with immediate effect.
“The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances and wishes him and his family well for the future.
“Everyone at Manchester United remains focused on continuing the team’s progress under Erik ten Hag and working together to deliver success on the pitch.”
Ronaldo also released a statement after the club made the announcement.
He said: “Following conversations with Manchester United we have mutually agreed to end our contract early.
“I love Manchester United and I love the fans, that will never ever change. However, it feels like the right time for me to seek a new challenge.
“I wish the team every success for the remainder of the season and for the future.”
Meanwhile, Ronaldo will lead Portugal in the team’s opener against Ghana in the FIFA World Cup on Thursday.
