NorthEast United FC’s Guillermo Fernandez was delighted after winning the 133rd edition of the Durand Cup. With it, the Highlanders created history as they won their maiden silverware. In fact, NorthEast United had their backs against the wall as Mohun Bagan Super Giant scored twice with Abdul Samad and Jason Cummings scoring for the hosts in the first half at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Saturday.
However, Alaeddine Ajaraie and Guillermo Fernandez leveled for the Highlanders in 15 minutes after half-time to take the match into extra time and then the penalty shootout. The visitors won on penalties and they will look to keep up the good show.
Fernandez said while talking to the official website of the ISL, “We feel very good (to win the Durand Cup). We are very happy. I’m very happy (with the goal) and the fact that we won the trophy,” Fernandez stated after winning the final in penalty shootouts.
The striker revealed how the head coach inspired the team during his pep talk at the break by saying, “The message was to go with a good mind and to win the match. They were leading at the break, but NorthEast United FC are a strong team, and finally, we won.”
Meanwhile, the upcoming season of the Indian Super League will kick off on 13th September and NorthEast United will begin their campaign against newly added Mohammedan SC on September 16.
“The objective is to be better in every match and be competitive,” the forward remarked.
On the other hand, Alaeddine Ajaraie was also delighted to deliver the goods for the team when they had their backs against the wall.
“I am very happy for the city of Guwahati. We did a good job; it’s a great win. I hope to continue this form in future matches,” Ajaraie remarked after defeating Mohun Bagan SG.
The Highlanders stunned the Mariners and Ajaraie said it was a great win against a potent team.
Speaking in context, he said, “This is a big motivation for us to win against a great team. It’s not normal. It’s total teamwork.”
