It is well known that Sunil Chhetri shares a strong bond with Virat Kohli. Kohli recently revealed how Chhetri told him about his retirement plan before making a public announcement. Chhetri said when he talks to Virat Kohli, he knows he understands him.
Chhetri recently announced his retirement and the match against Kuwait on June 6th at the Salt Lake Stadium will be his last. After Chhetri announced his decision, he received a lot of congratulatory messages from all over the globe and Kohli was also among the well-wishers.
“Yes, I did talk to him about the decision because we are close now. More importantly, we talk about these things because we understand the next person. The other person will understand exactly the way it is. So, the ups and downs of sports, this part of retirement, when we chat, we understand that the other person understands it. I wish him all the best for his next game,” Chhetri said on Friday while talking to the media.
Chhetri revealed he shares a lot of laughter with Virat Kohli and has a good bond with the former Indian captain.
“We talk about a lot of normal things. We share a lot of laughter. We share a lot of jokes and a lot of funny stuff. I have had a lot of deep and meaningful chats. But, we catch up exactly from where we left it. The few times when I have felt the heat of who I am and the need to perform and the few times that he has felt the heat of who he is and the need to perform, is exactly when we have chatted,” Chhetri said in 2023.
Earlier, Kohli had wished Chhetri the best for his second innings after retirement.
“He’s actually a really dear friend. He messaged me as well, informing me that he’s going to do it. But I’d say that he felt like he’s at peace with the decision. I’ve become really close with over the years and wish him nothing but the best. He’s a lovely guy,” Kohli said while talking to RCB social media.
