Gurjit Kaur completes her 100th cap for the Indian Women’s Hockey team as India loses to South Korea at the Asian Cup

Indian Women’s Hockey team’s pillar Gurjit Kaur completes her 100th cap for the national team. She completed her century while featuring for Indian at the Women’s Asian Cup in Muscat, Oman. Although it was a moment to cherish for India’s star drag-flicker, it was not the result that she would have hoped as India lost to South Korea 3-2 in the Asian Cup semifinals.

Gurjit made her debut against Malaysia in 2014 and since then has shown great determination and grit to continue playing for the Indian Women’s hockey team. Over the years she has become a very vital player of the Indian Eves especially with her drag flicking prowess. Her goals for India have often helped the team bag success in the past and Gurjit is showing no signs of stopping here. She has guided India to many titles and will keep on doing so in the future. The most notable title in her career so far has to be the 9th Women’s Asia Cup in 2017, Japan. She scored a total of eight goals in the tournament and ended the event as the tournament’s third-highest goal-scorer.

She went on to contribute to the team’s Silver Medal win at the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy in 2018. Gurjit was a vital cog for the Indian team that reach their maiden quarterfinals at the FIH Women’s World Cup London in 2018, as well as India’s historic Silver Medal in Asian Games 2018.

Gurjit Kaur was sensational for India at the Tokyo Olympics last year. She was very important for the Indian Eves and their journey to the 4th spot at the Summer Games. Her biggest achievement has to be the goal she scored against Australia in the Quarterfinals where India won 1-0 and went on to script history. Gurjit also scored two goals in the bronze medal match against Great Britain where they lost 3-2 and missed out on the Olympic medal.

“I am very fortunate to have come into the Indian team. We were already at the cusp of rising in our performances at the world level and I feel very fortunate to have gotten this opportunity to play in some of India’s fine victories. I thank my teammates for being extremely supportive all these years and I also thank the seniors in the team for guiding me,” Gurjit Kaur said looking back at her journey.

Her presence in th Indian Women’s Hockey team will be crucial as India have qualified for the FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup later this year in Spain and Netherlands.
