India to Host Germany in Two-Match Hockey Series in October

The Indian men’s hockey team is set to face world champions Germany in a two-match bilateral series next month. The games will be held at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi on October 23 and 24, offering fans a thrilling encounter between two of hockey’s biggest powerhouses.

India and Germany have a storied history of intense competition, with memorable clashes in major tournaments. Most recently, Germany defeated India 3-2 in the semifinals of the Paris 2024 Olympics, ending India’s hopes of a final appearance.

However, India bounced back to secure a bronze medal by defeating Spain 2-1, marking their second consecutive Olympic medal, after having beaten Germany to claim the bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The series will show top-tier international hockey and is expected to attract a significant crowd. Dilip Tirkey, president of Hockey India, emphasized the significance of the event in a media statement: “This bilateral series against Germany will be a remarkable showcase of world-class hockey. Both India and Germany have a rich history in the sport, and this series will give fans an opportunity to witness an intense competition between two of the most formidable teams in the world.”

Henning Fastrich, president of the German Hockey Federation, echoed the excitement of bringing the German team to India. “India has always been a special place for hockey, and our team is excited to play in front of passionate Indian hockey fans,” Fastrich said.

India, currently coached by Craig Fulton and captained by Harmanpreet Singh, has had a strong year. The team recently clinched their fifth Asian Champions Trophy title in China, further solidifying their position as a top contender in global hockey. The squad is preparing for the Germany series at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Centre in Bengaluru, where they will be fine-tuning their strategies for the upcoming challenge.

This series will not only serve as a prestigious event for both teams but will also offer valuable preparation as they continue to build towards future international competitions. Fans can expect a high level of play from two of the world’s most competitive teams.
