Savita Punia feels that the Indian Eves should play as a team rather than focusing on individuals

The Indian Women’s Hockey team will gear up to face Spain twice in two big games on the 26th and 27th of February in the FIH Hockey Pro League. The Indian Eves have won two big games against China already and will look to continue that winning run in their upcoming fixtures. They are currently in the third spot in the points table.

A lot depends on India’s performances against Spain and players like Grace Ekka and Savita Punia will once again have big roles to play if India wants to get positive results from these matches. Both the experienced players spoke about their upcoming matches and what to expect from their upcoming fixtures.

Apart from experienced forwards in Vandana Katariya, Lalremsiami and Sharmila Devi, they have added Sangita Kumar to the roster. Speaking on the new inclusion, Savita Punia said, “Whether she will start in the next game or not is not my call. She might start in the next game or the match after, but that is solely the coach’s decision.”

She added, “Whether it’s an experienced player or young player, the team always look to have a balance which is important. Sangita has a lot of skill and speed, she trains with us and we have seen that. If she plays with us, I am sure that she will contribute to the team in a positive manner”.

India’s performances in the FIH Hockey Pro League have been pretty superb till now and a lot of credit goes to the veteran Deep Grace Ekka. But instead of taking credit, the veteran defender feels that every department has played their role in the success till now and will look to continue that form in future.

She remarked, “It won’t be fair to mark out one position. Mistakes can happen in any position and we have to be mindful of that. Like for instance, if you are a defender, communication is important to tackle and slow down a skilful attacker”.

Lastly, both Savita and Grace Ekka did not make any future predictions rather they shared their experiences and highlighted how they need to play as a team rather than focusing on individual play. “All the good teams are playing in the tournament. We plan accordingly and make preparations for the same. Each team will be looking to give their best and so will we. Our team has learned that we have to play as a total unit and not as individuals.”
