India’s imminent sporting personalities greet youngsters ahead of their participation at the Khelo India University Games

 

India will resume the Khelo India University Games by bringing athletes from all corners of the country slated to start from 24th April to 3rd May 2022 in Bengaluru. It will be the biggest competition held in India involving over 4500 from around 190 universities to fight it out in 20 different sports.

Over the years Khelo India University Games have given a great platform for the young boys and girls in different sports and the growth has been visible in their performances at international events.

Speaking about the tournament Asian Games medallist Vimal Kumar said, “It’s very heartening to note that the Khelo India University Games will be happening in Bengaluru. I would like to take this opportunity to wish the athletes all the very best as well as the organizers involved in making this event possible.”

Commonwealth Games medallist shuttler Aparna Popat has also reiterated the words of Vimal Kumar as he welcomes the young kids back to the tournament. “I would like to wish the stakeholders of the KIUG – Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports – Government of Karnataka, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sports Authority of India, Association of Indian Universities, Indian Olympic Association, National Sports Federation and Jain University all the very best for hosting the second edition of the Khelo India University Games. I would also like to wish the participants all the very best for the tournament.”

It is truly a flagship event and the repercussion of such a sporting event at the university level was felt at the Tokyo Olympics as India’s participation and medal count both saw a steady increase.

World Championship medallist in the long jump, Anju Bobby George who has been empowering kids with their knowledge in sports every now and then has also been a very crucial part of India’s sporting grassroots. Anju Bobby George also wished the youngsters to perform their best at the event. She said, “The Khelo India University Games is set to take place in Bengaluru, so don’t miss the action. I would like to wish the athletes all the very best and I hope that the tournament is a grand success.”

Khelo India University Games will include f 13 disciplines starting from weightlifting wrestling, judo, kabaddi to Volleyball, swimming, mallakhambha, yogasana, archery and fencing. Karate and Boxing will also get added to the list and will be held at the Jain University Global Campus. Meanwhile table tennis, badminton and tennis will be conducted at the Jain Sports School and shooting will be organized at the Sports Authority of India’s shooting range. Athletics will be held at the Kanteerava Stadium and lastly, hockey matches will be conducted at the Field Marshal Cariappa Stadium.
