Neeraj Chopra and Dinesh Karthik to headline India-UK Week of Sport initiative

 

The British government launched the ‘India-UK Week of Sport’ on Monday to celebrate and pay tribute to all the incredible “living bridge” between both nations on the occasion of India’s 75th year of Independence.

Olympic gold medallist and history maker Neeraj Chopra and Cricketer and commentator Dinesh Karthik are among the sportspersons celebrating the event starting from 21st of February and will run till the 27th of the same month, according to the UK High Commission.

The event is going to highlight a series of on and off the field interaction that will only share the love shared by the people from both countries and bring the people of both nations together by the bond of sports.

The high commission stated that the event will see the best sporting personalities from both nations reflecting on their own journeys.

“It will include Olympic and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Neeraj Chopra, cricketer Dinesh Karthik, para-badminton World Champion Manasi Joshi, tennis legend Vijay Amritraj and India rugby captain Vahbiz Bharucha among others,” it said in a statement.

The British commission highlights the various sports that both India ad Britain share similar kind of love and how much enthusiastic are the people of both countries regarding sports in general. The even however is done basically putting the focus on India’s elaborate sporting culture on its 75th year of Independence.

Alex Ellis, the British High Commissioner to India, said: “The UK and India share a love for sports. Cricket, football, tennis, badminton, and hockey bring us together. The Week of Sport is a celebration of this bond and our living bridge.”

“I look forward to more activities this year as India celebrates 75 years of Independence and the UK hosts the Commonwealth Games and the final match of the Test series,” he said.

In the statement, the high commission said this week’s activity will lead up to the ‘India-UK Together 2022’ initiative. “The joint initiative, led by the British Council and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, will be launched later this year,” it said.

With sports remaining at the forefront these events will obviously build a positive relationship between the two nations and will be of importance for both their futures in the coming years. The relationship may extend from sports to various fields like art, education, art and much more.
