Andy Murray to retire after Paris Olympics

Three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray has confirmed that the upcoming Paris Olympics will be the final tournament of his career. The Brit had earlier said that he wouldn’t be participating in the hard court swing of the tour.

Murray is a two-time Gold medallist at the Olympics, winning in 2012 London and 2016 Rio de Janeiro. The veteran defeated Roger Federer in straight sets in 2012 and won against Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro in the next edition.

“Arrived in Paris for my last ever tennis tournament,” Murray wrote on X.

“Competing for Team GB has been by far the most memorable weeks of my career and I’m extremely proud to get to do it one final time!”

After two hip surgeries in 2019, Murray hasn’t had the desired results but he has given his 120% on the court. Murray’s last ATP tournament win came at Antwerp in October 2019.

Murray will play in the singles event and he will team up with Dan Evans for the doubles.

Back in February, Murray, 36, said: “I probably don’t have too long left but I’ll do as best as I can these last few months.

“I still love competing and still love the game but it gets harder and harder to compete the older you get, to keep your body fit and fresh.”

Recently a BBC reporter said that Murray is tarnishing his legacy after his first-round loss against Benoit Paire in Open sud de France.

“Tarnishing my legacy? Do me a favour,” Murray responded on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

“I’m in a terrible moment right now I’ll give you that. Most people would quit and give up in my situation right now. But I’m not most people and my mind works differently.

“I won’t quit. I will keep fighting and working to produce the performances I know I’m capable of.”
