Russia’s Daniil Medvedev has created history as he has become the first man other than Big 4 (Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray) to be in the ATP top two rankings since 2005. Medvedev leapfrogged Spain’s legend, Rafael Nadal, from the number two spot on Monday in the latest update of the ATP rankings.
Medvedev now has 9940 rating points whereas Nadal has 9670 points under his bag. Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic is at the top of the pile with 12008 points.
Medvedev dethroned Nadal from the number two position after he defeated Pierre-Hugues Herbert by 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 in the finals of the Open 13 to clinch the title. This is Medvedev 10th career’s title.
Medvedev is delighted to be the new World No. 2 and stated it is a great achievement for him.
“Just wanted to let you know how happy I am on becoming No. 2 in the world. Especially, since it’s the first time after 2005 when somebody out of the Big 4 becomes No. 2. So, it’s a great achievement,” said Medvedev while talking to US Open Tennis.
Meanwhile, since 2005, the number two position was held for 368 weeks by Nadal, 203 by Federer, 144 by Djokovic, and 41 by Murray.
On the other hand, Daniil Medvedev is yet to win a grand slam in his young career. Medvedev had lost in the final of the US Open 2019 and then lost last month against Novak Djokovic in the final of the Australian Open. Medvedev added that the biggest result of his career came back in the 2019 US Open.
“I’m always remembering the US Open swing, 2019, my biggest result so far. My first big result in a Grand Slam. With a, for sure, amazing story with the crowd which ended really well, I think,” added the Russian.
