US Open Champion Daniil Medvedev is excited to make his Laver Cup debut for Team Europe. Medvedev recently won his first major title as he defeated Novak Djokovic in the US Open final in straight sets. After celebrating his big win, Medvedev is focused once again on the next tournament.
In fact, this is the first time that the Russian will be playing in Laver Cup. The World no.2 will look to continue his good form as he had only dropped a single set in the entire US Open.
“I had a week off. We had a great time celebrating the victory,” said Medvedev. “I’ve been soaking it all in. Now the next tournament is coming and I’m just looking forward to playing some great tennis.”
In fact, earlier in February Medvedev had helped Russia win the ATP Cup. The 25-year old admitted that it will be a bit different as he will be representing the whole continent in Laver Cup.
“It’s a bit different than playing for your country,” said the world number two. “Here, we don’t play for the country; we play for the entire continent. I’m excited because it’s my first time. I really wanted this week to come.
Medvedev added that it’s is a dream come true for him to win his first slam title as he thought of achieving his goal from a young age. The Russian said he wants to keep going strong and win more major titles in his career.
“It’s just a goal that I accomplished that not so many players manage to do,” he said. “And that’s great because I was dreaming about it since I was young. I dreamed about it even more after my first two finals. I know that nobody can take it away from me. That’s the best feeling.
“Now I want to play better. I want to get more titles, whether it’s Grand Slams, Masters or Laver Cup. That’s how I approach it.”
