Former World number one John McEnroe has rated Novak Djokovic’s chances of winning the French Open 2020 as highly as the defending champion, Rafael Nadal. Djokovic recently won the Italian Open 2020, which was his 5th title in Rome. The World number one was disqualified from the US Open 2020 but made a roaring comeback to win his 36th ATP 1000 Masters title.
Djokovic showed great form on clay in Rome and he is one of the favourites for the ongoing French Open. The Serbian showed why he is one of the best in the business as he cruised to the second round of the Roland Garros as he defeated Mikael Ymer in straight sets by 6-0, 6-2, 6-3 .
Djokovic is targeting his second French Open title and there is no doubt that Rafael Nadal will be the biggest hurdle before him. Nadal is always a favourite at the Roland Garros and he is the undisputed king of clay. The Spainiard has won 12 French Open titles thus far and he would be looking to make it 13 this time around.
John McEnroe said while talking to express.co.uk, “I rate Novak’s chances as highly as high as Rafa’s at the French Open, yes. Normally, you’d go with Rafa but at some point, I mean he’s won it 12 times, but it seems like he’s as well set up as he’s ever been.”
McEnroe added that Djokovic has made a niche for himself between the two best Tennis players of all time – Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Nole has won 17 Grand Slam titles and he has been a champion over the years.
“He’s been able to break himself into the two all-time greatest players and be part of that mix where you decide maybe Novak will be the greatest”.
The American added that Djokovic has shown a strong character after his disqualification from the US Open. Novak will be up against Ričardas Berankis in the second round on Thursday.
