Novak Djokovic is still favorite to win US Open: Alexander Zverev

World no. 4 Alexander Zverev reckons Novak Djokovic is still the favorite to win the upcoming US Open. Zverev had ended Djokovic’s dominating run when the German defeated the Serbian in the semi-final of the Tokyo Olympics in three sets.

Subsequently, the 24-year old continued his sublime form as he won fifth ATP Masters 1000 title by beating Andrey Rublev by 6-3, 6-2. Thus, Zverev will be one of the favorites for the US Open as he is playing the Tennis of his life.

Zverev had also qualified for the final of the US Open in 2020 but had lost to Dominic Thiem despite having a two sets lead. However, the youngster feels Djokovic will be a front contender in the US Open.

Meanwhile, Djokovic has been in sublime form as he has already won all the three majors of the ongoing season. Djokovic was defaulted in the third round of US Open 2020 in his match against Italy’s Matteo Berrettini and he will aim to go all the way in the coveted tournament.

The Serbian is on the cusp of making history as he can become the first male player to win Calendar Slam since Rod Laver if he goes all the way in the upcoming major.

“The US Open is a week that everybody is looking forward to. I think Novak [Djokovic] will be back. He’s obviously going to be the favourite, as well. But I think other guys are going to be in great shape,” Zverev said following his commanding victory. “I’m looking forward to the week. Let’s see how it goes. But there is still one week to go. I still have a lot of work ahead of me. I have to find my rhythm in New York, as well.”

Zverev added that the World no.1 will be fresh after taking a break from the Toronto Open as well as the Cincinnati Open.

“I do think that Djokovic is still the favourite. I do think he’s going to be playing incredible tennis there,” Zverev said. “He’s going to be fresh, and I think there is also other guys that are in very good form. I think Rublev is in very good form, Medvedev, Tsitsipas, all those guys are playing great tennis.

“It’s definitely going to be an interesting US Open. But I’m also looking forward to it, because I know where I stand, I know how I’m playing, and I hope I can continue the work and hopefully play even better in New York.”
