World No. 1 Novak Djokovic continued his domination in the Australian Open to clinch his ninth title at the competition. The Serbian defeated Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in straight sets in the final on Sunday. Djokovic has savoured success in all the nine finals he has played at the Australian Open and he has rightly earned the sobriquet as ‘King of Melbourne’.
This was Djokovic’s 18th slam title in his glorious career and he is only two titles short of matching Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer’s tally. Meanwhile, Djokovic has matched Rafael Nadal’s elite record after winning the first slam of the year.
Djokovic has now clinched his sixth major title after turning 30 and has equaled Nadal’s tally. Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Stan Wawrinka are active players who have won a major after turning 30.
Former World No.1 Roger Federer has won four titles whereas his countryman Stan Wawrinka has won two majors after going past 30.
On the other hand, Ken Rosewell and Rod Laver had won four titles each after they had turned 30. America’s former player Andre Agassi had won two majors after he had crossed 30.
Meanwhile, Novak’s six titles include three Australian Opens, two Wimbledons, and a US Open title whereas Rafael Nadal has won four French Opens and two US Open titles. Roger Federer has won two Wimbledon titles and as many Australian Open crowns after turning 30.
This record goes to show that the Big Three – Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Roger Federer have maintained a high level of fitness and they are still going strong despite going past 30 years of age. All three of them have indeed proved that age is just a number and they keep getting better.
