Former Australian Tennis legend Todd Woodbridge feels former World no.1 Roger Federer will be disappointed not to get many Grass matches under his belt. Federer has admitted that main goal is to do well in the upcoming Wimbledon but his preparations leading into the major tournament hasn’t been satisfactory.
Meanwhile, Roger Federer had pulled out of French Open 2021 after winning the first three matches and qualifying for the fourth round. Federer said that he wanted to take things slowly and give himself more time for Wimbledon.
Federer did look good in the three matches of Roland Garros which he won but once again veered off the track in Halle. The Swiss maestro who has won 10 times at Halle, won his first match against Ilya Ivashka but he was beaten in three sets by 20-year old Canadian Felix Auger Aliassime, which is a worrying sign for Federer.
In fact, Federer is always considered as a number one favourite for the Wimbledon Championship. However, with him being out of form and not at the top of his fitness, Novak Djokovic will enter the tournament as a number one contender in absence of Rafael Nadal.
“His fitness is fine but he’s lacking match play,” Todd Woodbridge said. “That time away from the game was not easy and Halle, in his lead-in tournament, went out to Felix Auger-Aliassime, the young Canadian. He’ll be disappointed not getting more matches under his belt on the grass. The hardest part about Halle, absolutely zero crowds, and that’s not good for Roger,” the Aussie added.
“He feeds off that and I think when he’s playing against opponents, they also feel that the crowd goes for him.”
There is no doubt that it is going to be a difficult road ahead for Roger Federer.
